About Stara planina

The main ridge of Stara Planina is approximately 550 kilometers long, stretching from Zaječar to the Black Sea. A portion of this range forms the natural border between Serbia and Bulgaria. Stara Planina is also known by another name – the Balkans, which is why the Balkan Peninsula was named after this mountain range. Its highest peak along the border is Midžor, reaching an altitude of 2,169 meters. One of the most beautiful landscapes of Stara Planina is the "Babin Zub" nature reserve, situated at an elevation of 1,758 meters. Stara Planina has a moderate continental climate. The mountain is covered in snow for nearly five months of the year at altitudes between 1,100 and 1,900 meters, offering great potential for long alpine skiing tracks.

The shortest route for those coming from Belgrade or Western Serbia is the Niš–Svrljig–Jalovik Izvor–Kalna–Babin Zub direction, which is 30 kilometers shorter than the road via Knjaževac. There is also an alternative route: Niš–Pirot–Kalna–Babin Zub, where you travel by highway from Niš to Pirot until the exit for Temska. All mentioned roads are in good condition.
